The Citronella Dog Collar: A humane solution for nuisance barking
Lee Dobbins

Defined Tag:

The citronella dog collar has been touted by many as a gentle, yet effective method of treating nuisance barking. Recommended by veterinarians, dog behaviorists and trainers as a humane way of successfully treating your dog’s barking problem, the simple design and ease of use also make it a favorite among dog owners as well.

The citronella dog collar can be used on any breed of dog that is at least six months old and weighs more than six pounds. The device features a patented technology that releases a harmless burst of citronella, which is activated when your dog barks.

This spray method works on four of your dog’s five senses in that he can see, hear, smell and also feel the product. This is a gentle approach for interrupting the thought process and stopping them from barking.

A recent study conducted by Cornell University found that 88% of dogs responded favorably to a citronella dog collar as opposed to 44% who were given a shock collar. Also, the discomfort and pain caused by shock collars may be responsible for an increase in aggressive or anxious behavior, which merely adds to the original problem instead of correcting it.

Although the citronella dog collar should never be left on your dog 24 hours a day, it is ideal for instances or places where barking could be considered a nuisance, such as trip to the park, on walks, or perhaps in your own backyard.

Since it is non-toxic to humans and animals as well as the environment, it can be used just about anywhere. However, the collar shouldn’t be worn on your dog if they are playing or swimming as it is water resistant, but not waterproof.

The first time your dog is sprayed by the citronella dog collar, he or she will be surprised and immediately try to identify the source of the substance. This surprise interruption will cause them to stop barking and soon they will associate the behavior with getting sprayed.

After just a few short days, your pooch will learn to stay quiet while concentrating on other, less disrupting activities. You’ll soon have happier neighbors, not to mention a happier dog whose energies aren’t depleted by excessive barking and fretting.

You should first use your new citronella dog collar at a time when you’ll be home for the entire day to monitor response and behaviors. You’ll also want to be there to give rewards for good behavior as well.

First, adjust the citronella collar as you would any other collar, fitting it so there is room to slip two fingers underneath. If it is too tight, not only will it be uncomfortable for your dog, but the sound waves created by the barking won’t reach the microphone to trigger the release of spray. Also, a citronella dog collar that is worn too loose may twist around and not work properly at all.

This method is not only a quick and easy way to teach your dog the consequence of barking, but it won’t cause him the pain or discomfort often associated with other methods.
